What's Foging and Heat Treatment?

Forging endows drilling tools with a solid structure, while heat treatment tempers their core toughness — these two key processes enable drilling tools to withstand high pressure, wear, and complex geological conditions during drilling operations. They directly determine the service life and operational reliability of drilling tools, and serve as the fundamental guarantee for efficient drilling.

Purposes of Forging:

1.Remove metal impurities such as pores, looseness, and inclusions in steel, making the material structure denser.

2.Refine grains and form fiber flow lines, significantly improving the workpiece's strength, hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.

3.Initially shape the workpiece, reducing the allowance for subsequent machining and lowering production costs.

Purposes of Heat Treatment:

The purpose of post-forging heat treatment is to eliminate defects caused during the forging process and improve the material's mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

1. Eliminate Metal Defects

Forging is a common metalworking method that refines internal grains and enhances material hardness, strength, and toughness. However, defects such as cracks, excessive stretching, and internal pores are likely to occur during forging. These defects adversely affect the material's mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Therefore, eliminating such metal defects is the primary goal of post-forging heat treatment.

2. Enhance Strength and Toughness

Through hammering and extrusion, the internal metal structure is altered, resulting in grain refinement and directional flow. These changes improve the material's mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, yield point, hardness, ductility, and impact resistance. However, these changes are not flawless and are often accompanied by negative effects like internal stress concentration and grain growth. Heat treatment eliminates these adverse impacts, further enhancing the forging's mechanical properties.

3. Improve Corrosion Resistance

In addition to mechanical properties, corrosion resistance is a crucial performance indicator for forgings. Heat treatment removes impurities and small pores from the forging, resulting in a smoother surface. This makes the forging more corrosion-resistant and less susceptible to chemical erosion during use.
